IMPORTANT TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Installation and setup
Please note that since iPod touch and iPad (WiFi only) do not have built-in GPS-receivers, an external GPS-receiver is required. Only those receivers are compatible, which are officially supported by Apple. Due to the size of the package and certain In-App items, we recommend purchasing and downloading the application, In-App items or updates through WiFi or fixed line Internet access via the iTunes software installed on a personal computer.
Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Background navigation has to be turned on while using the application; you can do this under "Settings / Advanced settings" in iOS 7.
The maps are part of the application, no roaming fees,: no need for cellular network coverage, no surprises. (Some Services – e.g. Live Traffic – require mobile Internet connection. Your operator may charge you for the data used and costs may be significantly higher when used abroad. To avoid unwanted roaming costs being generated abroad by the Live Traffic Service or other services requiring Internet connection (where applicable), please carefully review your settings in the Config Wizard or turn off „Data Roaming” on your device.)
Map updates are subject to availability and may come as part of software updates. End User License Agreement conditions apply.
Pros and cons of Western Europe - iGO primo app app for iPhone and iPad
Western Europe - iGO primo app app good for
We spent a week in Tuscany at a villa and drove to various locations every day. This program was a life saver. It was accurate and very reliable. We used it for trips into various towns and around the countryside. I even used it to find our car in a large parking lot in Siena. The main issue I had was the GPS was slow to find our location (could be the iPhone) when I first started the program but once it locked on to our location, it worked flawlessly. We did have a issue in Venice because the program did not have our hotel address in its database. IGO would only find the street but not the exact house number.
This program was one of my best purchases and it made our trip much more enjoyable. We found wineries, parking lots, towns, rail stations and sightseeing locations without a problem. The interface was easy to use and worked perfect.
Just returned from a European vacation that included 10 days of driving in Ireland and Northern Ireland. We put 2700 km (1700 miles) on the rental car, 95% of those guided by this app. I cant say enough good things about it. Because it is stored on your phone or iPad you dont have to deal with data roaming which more than pays for the app.
If youve ever been to Ireland you know there are all kinds of tiny un-named roads, but this app never failed us. The only times I was unable to use it were when we wanted to go to a house that didnt have an "address". No other GPS could have found those places either. Another issue I had was in a place where there was a newer highway that wasnt shown on the map - it sent us on the old road which was just a little longer and slower, but we still got to our destination. One thing I did do before we left was to add some of the places we were going to my contacts then all I had to do was search my contacts, select it, and we were off. POIs were good too, but we couldnt find the Newgrange (Bru Na Boine?) visitors center - it sent us to the actual site and you cant access it there. That was the only time we got "lost" on the trip.
An added benefit of this app is that it will show the speed limit in red if you are about 10% over the limit. This came in very handy as often times I wasnt sure what the speed limit was but knew the app would warn me if I was going too fast. Didnt get a single ticket!
For some reason I didnt have the voice prompts - not sure why not, but the visual directions were fine and I probably wouldnt have been able to hear the voice over all the noise in the car anyway :)
Overall this app far exceeded my expectations. I would give it 4 1/2 stars just due to a couple of minor glitches, so im rounding up to 5 This app is very reasonably priced. Buy it and save yourself lots of frustration.
We have driven all over Umbria in Italy for two weeks and this app has never failed to get us where we wanted to go. Whether it was the Autostrada or the twisted streets of Perugia, iGo Primo for Western Europe never skipped a beat. We would have been lost without it. It was money well spent.
I used this for a couple of weeks driving through Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and France. I cant believe how well it worked. Navigator provided info on gas stations, knows speed limit changes. I was amazed at the accuracy of the small streets even in medieval towns and where cars werent permitted. Got us to hotel in Venice on foot. Truly amazing app. I highly recommend.
I recently made a trip from NW London to West Sussex, which is south of London. I have used Navigon for years but have been reading about some serious issues with it lately and decided it was important to have a backup. I compared iGO with Navigon on this 60 mile trip.
The two apps tended to pick the same routes but the Navigon was much faster at calculating routes and recalculating them along the way. The Navigon might notice I was making my own modification and recalculate before iGO even noticed I hadnt taken that exit off the highway, for example.
I prefer the iGO map rendering, which at first seemed slower than Navigon, but later improved when I adjusted the display settings not to use hires rendering (I think thats what I did). Direct manipulation of the map in iGO seems faster than Navigon.
I really wanted the Navigon and iGO to take me AROUND central London rather than through it, and at the time I couldnt convince either to take an alternative route (M25 -> M23). Luckily I knew where I was going (for a change) and just ignored it until it had no choice. Both apps tended to make the exact same choices as I was driving around London.
However, since I got back and read the manual, I changed my "route planning method" to easy, and that route took me around central London due to the greatly reduced number of turns, etc. It was almost the exact route i wanted to take.
[I had previously expressed concerns about the UK post codes add-on not working down to the street level, but I was just being very stupid about it. The UK post codes package works great!]
My main concern is that a whole bunch of my contacts that have UK addresses in them are failing to be found. The app says No address found to resolve. The same address resolves just fine in Navigon. I have not yet figured out which addresses work and which ones do not. I was able to fix one that was not working, however, by changing the city field (in my address book) from "London" to "London, Highgate", which is what it put in itself when I manually went to the address.
I have reported this bug and they will attempt to fix it.
A few more observations. They menu system can be a little confusing. They seem to change out from under you. However, when I turned on menu animation, I discovered a hierarchy to them which hadnt been obvious before. Menu animations are not smooth by any stretch of the imagination. I cant imagine why, this is an iPhone 4.
One last thing: when navigating, the buttons on the display seem quite slow to respond. If you press a button you wait maybe a whole second before that button changes color to indicate it has been pressed. That makes no sense. I have not seen that in other apps.
Come on iGO. Your app is almost awesome! Keep plugging away: address book resolution and input response/performance are all you need to do to get 5 stars out of me.
[Updated Oct 17, 2012]
My concerns have not been addressed. Also I have come to realize that they are using non-standard widgets in their app. That means, for example, I cannot copy an address from an email and past it or any portion of it into this app. The text widget does not give me a Paste option.
I am ruling this app out for a while. Its good in a lot of ways but entering addresses is too hard.
The best nav app ive used, but this version doesnt have ukrainian (eastern europe version has it). If this can be fixed (even using inapp purchase) i would be extremely happy.
Some bad moments
Downloaded new update and crashed app. Now wont function at all, says null text whatever that means and takes 2 hours or more to download. Please fix ASAP.
After update doesnt start at all!!! Keeps crashing during loading!!!
Dont dont get this app. It does not have the maps. Wish if i can get a refund
